Step 1

INTRO AND SETUP

TEACHER NOTE: The following lesson is designed to create an awareness of safety within your classroom environment. It is imperative for students to adhere to the safety standards by working to create a classroom set of norms to be used within the Flite Test Curriculum as well as any classroom-based projects. If a structure is already in place, add to it, or help students connect the current safety structure to the Flite Test STEM Curriculum.

  • Introduce the concept of safety and how it can make an environment more productive.
  • Introduce the FT-Safety Posters (See Teacher Resources to download posters for printing), and state their obvious meanings.

  • If you have FT-Crafty Kits and materials, introduce the curriculum materials and their uses.
  • Quick Connections: After explaining the curriculum, have the students work together to designate a section of the room to devote to their scratch build aviation work. They can hang up posters, organize the tools and materials, etc. The teacher or advisor can decide where they wish to conduct the Flite Test Curriculum.

Step 2

CREATING THE NORMS

TEACHER NOTE: Guide the students to create five norms for safety when working on Flite Test Curriculum or equivalent.

  • With the Flite Test Work Area complete, have the students create five or more norms to follow for the rest of the school year. Below are some possible norms to include on a blank FT-Safety Poster (See Teacher Resources to download posters for printing). You can use Flite Test stickers as an option for decorating.
    • It is okay to fail and struggle on the path to success.
    • Work together to achieve new heights.
    • Scissors should always be pointed down.
    • Review safety rules prior to every build time.
    • Leave the X-Acto cutting to an adult.
    • Always clean up your station when done.
    • Wear goggles during flight testing.
    • Organize our FT-Workbench at the end of the day.
    • Work Hard!
    • Always moving forward!

You're done!
